The Key to Mo Maintenance
The month of Movember is almost upon us when men all over the world commit to some serious facial hair for 30 days in order to raise money for men’s health issues, in particular fighting testicular and prostate cancer and mental health problems. Movember has become something of a global style phenomenon, as well as a fantastic way to raise money, and if you’re a guy who has always wanted to test out a moustache or a girl with a bit of a thing for guys with handlebars then it’s an exciting time!
Of course growing the perfect Mo requires some inspiration and thanks to the wonders of the digital age there’s an enormous range of examples of fantastic facial hair out there to get your juices flowing. You could go for the rock n roll moustache along the lines of Freddy Mercury or Lemmy from Motorhead or perhaps you’re more suited to the trucker style so beloved by Hulk Hogan (also see Ben Stiller in Dodgeball). If you really want to make a statement then choose the Connoisseur style ‘tache, a fine bushy affair with twisted ends that curl upwards – it’s theatrical and yet so manly (think Kurt Russell in Tombstone or Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs of New York). And finally, there’s the ‘East London Hipster’ tache, which is most often a pencil thin line but may also encompass the bushy variety with finely twisted ends (and often a beard and a small dog).
It’s not just the growing of the ‘tache that is key but the maintenance too. Just like the hair on your head, the Mo requires grooming. A regular cleansing and scrubbing routine will make sure the hairs don’t go inwards and keep your Mo looking shiny and smooth, and trimming it periodically can contribute both to the shaping and making sure you end up with a fine and healthy specimen by 30th November. Facial hair often drains the moisture from your skin, which can result in flakiness and tangles – nip this in the bud with a beard elixir or beard oil – and comb regularly to make sure you’re not carrying around debris from last night’s diner. Finally, if you’re going for a statement Mo then use wax to keep that ‘tache looking styled and to give it some hold where you need it too.
Movember is such a fantastic cause and raising the cash is easy – all you have to do is grow a Mo! Chicago’s will be joining in the fun this year – if you’d like to get involved with our efforts then take a look at our Movember page.
