Christmas Nostalgia
Christmas tends to be a time when we all get a bit sentimental, looking back at all the Christmases that have gone before and reliving old traditions. While we all have our own individual and family nostalgia, there are some festive events that have invaded all our shared memories.
Eastenders – it’s always been a pretty depressing show but there was nothing quite like watching the Eastenders Christmas Day special to make you feel like your family rows and fails really weren’t that bad. Remember the one when Den hands Angie the divorce papers? Or the arrest of Janine Butcher? It’s a family tradition to listen to that distinctive theme tune, as much as the Queen’s Speech.
Xmas Films – Because no Christmas is complete with out a seasonal box office hit like The Santa Clause, Elf, A Christmas Story or Miracle on 34th Street. But even if your favourite doesn’t get shown, you’re hardly going winge because there’s nothing quite like being surrounded by your family, passing around a box of celebrations and watching a classic.
Nostalgic gifts – if there’s anything that really takes you back to Christmas past, it’s that gift that you unwrapped on Christmas day that makes you remember a time when you actually believed in Santa. From a Teddy Ruxpin, a Tamagotchi, the awesome Super Soakers, Pokémon cards, Nerf guns and He-Man and the Castle Greyskull, to that coveted Peaches ‘n’ Cream Barbie, these are the toys that made Christmas so great before someone burst the Santa bubble.
Sherry and a mince pie – do you remember the excitement of hanging up a stocking on Christmas Eve? Well it was nothing compared to that moment of finding that the mince pie you left out the night before has a bite taken out of it! One of the most widespread Christmas traditions and definitely one of the most thrilling (until the age of 12 at least).
And of course, we shouldn’t forget the Christmas anthems that bring the past back into soft focus, such as Fairytale of New York, All I Want For Christmas, Do They Know It’s Christmas? And of course Mr. Blobby. We’re feeling quite festive just thinking about it!
